Asphalt Additives
Chase’s asphalt additives (Rosphalt? R50 and Rosphalt? LT) create a 1-step waterproofing and wear protection course for bridges, roadways, tunnels, parking decks, ports, terminals, and other high traffic loading areas. The dry powder additive is combined in an asphalt plant with heated aggregate and liquid asphalt. The result is a highly modified mixture that exhibits elastomeric properties based on the thermoplastic nature of the polymer additive. Chase also offers a tack coat and edge sealing material as accessory products to complete the waterproofing system.
Use standard Agency approved PG grade of AC binder based on the specified grading for the region. In NY/NJ, this would be a “neat” or unmodified PG64-22. Rosphalt mixes are always designed using an unmodified virgin binder. The Rosphalt is a modifier that gives mixes the intended performance.

Cold applied Royston 754 Tac Coat is recommended unless Agency specifications deem otherwise. In those instances, a PG64-22 (AC-20/100 Pen) is recommended for a bridge deck. PG82-22 (or similar – for example 25 Pen grade) is recommended for a steel deck.

Lift Thickness is based on nominal maximum aggregate size, or as specified by Agency.? Rosphalt mix can be paved in two lifts if the total thickness of an asphalt mat is exceeded the maximum recommended. For the 9.5mm design, paving at a minimum of 1.5” to a maximum of 2.5” per lift.

Evaluation of Rheology and Engineering Properties of a Bridge Deck Thermo-Plastic Waterproofing Material
Verification of the Performance of Thermoplastic Plant Mix Additive Used To Produce Bridge Deck Waterproofing Materials
High-performance Additive |
Rosphalt? R50?
- Used in HMA mixes as a waterproof wearing or intermediate course
- Highly resistant to rutting and shoving
- Superior resistance to flexural fatigue
- Creates a highly modified elastomeric mixture
- Dry powder polymer added directly at HMA plant
Low-temperature Additive |
Rosphalt? 50LT
- Produced at lower temperatures than R50 additive
- Used in HMA mixes as a waterproof wearing or intermediate course
- Highly resistant to rutting and shoving
- Superior resistance to flexural fatigue
- Creates a highly modified elastomeric mixture
- Dry powder polymer added directly at HMA plant
Performance Additive |
Rosphalt? SG
- Standard paving equipment
- 1-step waterproofing / wearing course
- Competitive price point
- Storage of the dry SG additive does not require periodic storage tank maintenance
Tack Coat |
Royston? 754 Low VOC Tac Coat
- Cold applied, solvent-based elastomeric tack coat
- Application with brush, roller, airless sprayer or asphalt distributor truck.
- Minimized drying time to allow for short waiting time before paving.
Edge & Joint Sealer |
Royston? 120-29 Edge Sealer?
- Single component, cold-applied rubberized asphalt sealant
- Creates a waterproof seal between construction materials and asphalt overlay
- Applied to vertical faces prior to placing Rosphalt?, Rosphalt? LT and traditional HMA overlays.
